Temptation
Written By Sherry Marshall

(A mime about sin and temptation.)
Cast: male person (teen), demon, angel
Props: “sin” box, cigarette carton, large beer bottle, home made centerfold magazine with the letters “S-E-X” down the front, a bag of white cotton labeled “Drugs”, Christian “tract” with cross, cross that says “Jesus”, a “boo” sign, a devil costume (black or red cape, horns sunglasses), angel costume (white cape and halo)

Person enters onstage reading a tract with a cross, symbolizing a Christian pamphlet. Demon in black cape and a box with a bow approaches in a sinister way. On the box is written “sin”. He sets the box down and pulls out a carton of cigarettes and tries to entice the person to take it. The angel rushes in seeing the temptation. She pulls out the “boo” sign and encourages the audience to “boo” the demon. Then the angel tries to convince the person to reject the cigarettes, miming they are bad. The person waves them and the demon away. The angel is happy and the demon is angry. She points in the tract the person is holding and mimes about God and salvation. The demon then goes back to the box and pulls out a beer bottle and convinces the person to take the bottle this time, dropping the tract. He sneers at the angel that he got his way. She throws her cape at him and tries to convince the person to give her the bottle, again miming how bad it is. After some thought, the person gives it up. She smiles triumphantly at the demon that she won that battle and marches by him proudly. The angel picks up the tract and returns it to the person, again miming about God and salvation. Enraged, the demon goes back to his box and pulls out the magazine. He lets it unfold, then turns the person’s head to show him what’s inside (we can’t see it). The person grabs the magazine enthusiastically, drooling over its contents and again dropping the tract. The angel is horrified as the demon beams with content. She tries to again convince the person to give the magazine to her but the person shakes his head and turns away from her. The demon puts his hand on the person’s shoulder, pulling him away from the angel. Desperate, the angel then decides to pull her best card. She exits the stage briefly and returns with a cross with “Jesus” spelled across it. She shows it to the audience, points at the demon and nods her head, grinning. She then slaps the cross to the demon’s head sending him reeling back in pain. As he runs to exit, the angel kicks him in the rear. She then brings the cross to the person and tries to convince him to exchange it for the magazine. This is difficult for the person, but with further persuasion, the person does so. She is ecstatic, tossing the magazine away with disgust. She mimes for the person to pray. The person goes down on one knee holding the cross and bowing his head in prayer. The angel shields him with her cape. He then comes up with a totally different demeanor…he is happy and praising God. The demon returns with the bag of drugs. He tries to convince the person to take it. The person looks at the angel who smiles and points at the cross, then points at the demon. The person repeats this and also smiles, as he “gets it”. He himself turns and slaps the demon in the head with the cross and kicks him in the rear as he runs out. The person turns back to the angel who is thrilled. They both praise God and as the music fades, the person holds the cross high in the air as the angel bows on one knee raising her hands to the cross.
